10/16/10 Breast Cancer Awareness Blog Hop

16 Oct

Hello there! Thanks for hopping over. If you landed here today, chances are you are participating in the 10/16/10 Breast Cancer Awareness Blog Hop. Thank you so much for being on board and showing your support. If you are lost and looking for the beginning of the blog hop, please start at DSJM Designs to start the journey!

As I was thinking about this post, I began to ponder what is Breast Cancer Awareness, really? What is the purpose and what do I have to say about it? As I clicked from site to site and spoke to family and friends, I joyously discovered the result of this movement is building strong community.

Here’s a little story to describe how I see it: The police station in my neighborhood has a ridiculously large sign that reads “CommUNITY Center” (and yes, it really is written like that). At first glance I thought this sign was cliché, but quickly realized the significance. As a community we become unified. We help one another. Our souls find rest in knowing we are working together. Life seems a little bit safer and a little more manageable when we know we are not alone. When something as life-shaking as breast cancer sneaks into your world, it is community that helps you take a deep breath and move forward. This is life in the most beautiful sense. Being real and letting others into the sticky places in our lives.

Here’s a little something I made to represent my involvement. To show that I am in. that I care. I also want to contribute to the community, so I will be giving these earrings away to one of the followers of this blog. To subscribe, click the button on the right labeled ‘Sign Me Up’ under the ‘Email Subscriptions’ header. The random drawing will be held on Sunday 10/17/10 and the winner will be announced right here! To take a peek at more button earrings and sewn stationery, you can visit www.PinkButtonCreations.com.

    Dear Sweet Emily,

Your words touch my heart even though I never had breast cancer.
I did however participate in the 2006 Susan G. Komen 60 mile walk in San Diego. UNITY is exactly what you feel when you are walking with thousands of other people for the same cause. When I started to cry from the pain my horrible blisters were giving me ( I really should have opted for a bus ride to the next stop) I thought about my friend Pam who went through breast cancer and all the other people (men get it too!) that had it, and I realized what a wuss I was being! If they could go through the pain of cancer, I could go through the pain of blisters for one more day.

    Big hugs,

    Debi

Great project. I’m glad to hear you found inspiration through friends and family and the sign for the commUNITY center. :) I think in everyway we can find some sort of inspiration from somewhere for breast cancer awareness. I posted on another blog that at the local hospital here, we have a Breast Care Coordinator. She got a phone call from a newscaster that grew up in this area wanting to donate a good chunck of change to the breast care center at the hospital. So with that she designed a fund to help women get the breast care they deserve! She’s a great inspiration to the cause because she has great inspiration, her mom who is a breast cancer survivor!

What a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing that with us. I keep going back to the part that says “When something as life-shaking as breast cancer sneaks into your world” the word “sneaks” really describes how it happens. While your eating dinner, it’s sneaking in, while your sitting at work, it’s sneaking in, while your sleeping, it’s sneaking in. Please go get your mammograms everyone! You need to know now! Early detection is the key to survival!
